Nigeria Thanks Germany for the Repatriation of Benin Ancient Artifacts

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Nigerian minister of information and culture, appreciates the German government for bringing back the ancient artifact of Benin.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja, F.C.T between Nigeria and Germany proves a significant step towards returning the Benin bronze from Germany.

The Minister said the signing of the MoU is the beginning of an effort that will finalize the agreement in the December 2021 signing.

He added that a team of experts would soon engage some museums in Germany to help return the artifacts.

The German government has willingly promised to release the artifact to strengthen the relationship between both countries, although they acquired it through global trading.

The kindhearted attitude of the German government made them the first country to volitionally return over 1,130 pieces of an artifact to Nigeria after purchasing.

Due to this kind gesture, Nigerians, particularly indigenes of Edo state, developed a deep passion for the government of Germany.

The protocol leading to the repatriation of the artifacts will not be the end of an era but the beginning of a strong relationship and cooperation between the two countries.
